This bus was purchased from Kansas City Area Transportation. Why this bus? How many fishbowls have you seen with no standee windows? Not many, so I had to have it. Funny thing, when we picked this bus up in Kansas City, I had bought two 5307s and one 4521. #308 had a blown engine so it had to be towed. The other 5307 had problems too. It was very cold that day when we left Kansas City. The other 5307 lost its generator, which means
no heat. I tried to get it to work but couldn't. When I got to Topeka, Kansas, the generator caught fire. I set the bus out the then continued on with 617. And it ran good until we were south of Albuquerque when the bus slowed down to 25 MPH. I just couldn't figure out what was wrong, so I set it out at a rest stop then had it towed to California. This was the only trip in my career where I bought 3 buses and lost them all.
When I got the bus to Perris it would still run, then we noticed the engine pulley was not turning. I broke the lower camshaft, but the bus would still run. Now that was a shocker. I changed out the camshaft and the lower head and the bus ran well. But, again, it decided to give us trouble.
On the way to Pasadena one night, I looked back, and fire was coming out off the roof exhaust. So I stopped but the bus kept running. A few minutes later the fire department came by. I told them I had it under control and had it towed back to Perris. Upon investigation of the problem, I found the blower shaft assembly had broken up. I repaired it and had no more trouble out of #617 for years.
Fun Fleet Bus #617 was sold for scrap, but its engine was pulled and later used in bus #738, another Fun Fleet bus that was sold to Rapido Trains of Canada.
